Geek TV

I don’t watch much tv – I much prefer to read or surf online. My three guilty, geeky television pleasures are below – but I have questions about them.

Battlestar Galactica
This show is wonderful – it has it all, sex, violence, politics, religion, morality, technology and hunky men. However, the one burning question I have is… why is Sharon Cylon #8? There are seven known Cylons, plus four incognito, unnumbered Cylons. Why isn’t Sharon #7, and what happened to the Cylon who is supposed to fill that slot?

Lost
This show is also wonderful for most of the same reasons. What it lacks in politics and technology, it makes up for in the supernatural and mystery realm. Can I have a Sawyer for my very own? I would pet him and take care of him and call him George. I would like to know who all the Lost extras are… you only see them in the periphery of the camera, but they always seem happy, well fed, and cleanly dressed. In 105 days, wouldn’t some one of them have done something worthy of camera attention? Broke a leg, gotten a crush on a main cast member, set a tent on fire, discovered a Dharma station? How can they remain set decoration for that long?

Heroes
We just started watching Heroes last year, after Bryan’s SF club colleague Doug raved about it. We really enjoy the twisty plot, the characters, the whole concept of flawed, superpowered humans, and the shifting sands of good and bad. Alpha-hero Peter, who assimilates every power he comes in contact with, has hung around the Haitian, who can cancel all powers in his vicinity as well as induce forgetting. Why don’t Peter’s assumed Haitian powers 1) let him win all fights, and 2) cancel his own powers as well?

What are your favorite geeky television pleasures? (If you watch adult channels, I’d rather not know…) And what pressing plot questions do you have?

Red State Update

With apologies to Steph, who I stole this from, this is about the most hilarious equal-opportunity-bashing political humor video I’ve seen this year:

The Red State Update guys are hilarious - check out their other videos on their site.

Things That Make You Go “Bleh”

Couple of news items that really bugged me over the last few days…

Item: Home Depot announced that it was closing down 15 locations and shelving plans for 50 more that were to be built. This, I understand, is the first time they’ve ever had to close a store and not open a new one nearby. Home Depot is having trouble due to the shaky economic conditions…folks don’t do home improvements when they practically have to take out a loan to buy gas. Now, to me, being the simplistic pragmatist that I am, this news sounds bad if I’m an investor in Home Depot. Things aren’t going good when you have to shrink your business. However, apparently, the investment community disagrees with me. Home Depot’s shares went up 5% on the announcement. Why? Well, they were going to be cutting jobs, which Wall Street loves to hear. Is it me, or is that sort of bas-ackwards? Whatever happened to new of success causing a stock to rise and news of failure causing a stock to fall? We’re banking on failure, folks…and I think that’s a shame.

Item: U. S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-Heinz Field in Pittsburgh) has decided that he’s not satisfied with the National Football League’s investigation and punishment of the New England Patriots in the “Spygate” scandal. “Spygate” involved the Patriots taping signals from coaches of opposing teams to their players on the field…a no-no by league rule as well as being, well, unsporting. The NFL whacked the Patriots for doing this. Specter, a fan of a Patriots’ rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers, thinks that fining the Patriots coach $500K, the team $250K, and taking their first pick away in the last college player draft just isn’t good enough for him, and is calling for an investigation. Look, I don’t know whether the punishment was enough or not…but hey, Arlen, how about a little investigation of how the oil companies are killing the economy with $4 a gallon gas while scoring record profits? If I hear one more story about Congress investigating a sports issue (and the other proposed investigations are into the college football bowl system and the steroids problem in Major League Baseball) I am going to write in Terry Bradshaw for every office I vote for until he wins something, which will never happen, since Terry is smarter than most politicians anyway. It makes me cringe to think that we’re guaranteed that a sitting Senator will be our next President. :::sigh:::

More Headaches

This has been a really rough couple of weeks for me; I’ve had headache after headache, most of them migraines. Obviously, I’d rather not spend time at my computer or online if I don’t have to when my head is pounding.

I’ve been trying to figure out what is causing this sudden uptick in headaches, as I usually only have one or two migraines a month. My body is certainly trying to tell me something! My usual triggers are sleep deprivation, hormones, major emotional stress, alcohol, MSG & nitrites, excess sugar, and caffeine. Voila… there’s the answer! It’s been a combination of hormone fluctuations (which are getting worse as I approach my mid-40s), major stress at work, and, gee, I just relaxed my caffeine restriction. All three at once are too much, so I apparently hit a threshold a much greater frequency of headaches.

So, I’m going back on the wagon as pertains to caffeine, doggone it! As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I really like coffee. I’m also going to get more consistent and frequent about yoga and meditation, even practicing meditation alone when I don’t have time for both.

Hopefully, all that wil make a difference. If not, I’ll call my doctor and ask her to put me back on a preventive medication – I used to take a low-dose anti-convulsant to help managed them, and it worked.

Please accept my apologies for posting so infrequently and only rarely commenting on others’ blogs.

Mothers’ Day at the Circus

Sunday, for Mothers’ Day, we took mom to see Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo. It was an amazing production.

The story is, loosely, that of a clown looking back on his life after he dies. It’s actually very non-linear, with amazing physical feats interwoven with humorous set pieces. I can’t really effectively describe circus acts here – but aerial, tightrope, trampoline and more, this show had it all.

If the show is coming to your area, I highly recommend it.

The kids got me a new 8Gb iPod nano, which has been on my request list for some time, since my music library has hit 5 Gb and kept growing. Ben made me breakfast in bed and Zach went out to dinner with me – it was a good day.

Happy Mothers’ day to all mothers out there!
